HOW BIG COMPANIES LIKE ZARA IMPACT THE WORLD OF FAST FASHION?
It is far more likely to know the shop than not. With almost 2.260 stores in 96 different countries, this clothing store has become one of the famous shops in the world. It is known for its updated fashion trends and its quality of clothing. But what about its quantity? What makes Zara different
from any other store is the fact that the company launches a new collection almost every week. This business strategy was very beneficial to the brand, raising its fame and giving it its constant push to innovate. As a consequence of its uninterrupted update on different clothing types though, there is also a major downside: its surplus of manufacturing. Zara is such a big organisation and it falls in the top 10 worst fashion brands we should all avoid. This is especially because the company is not quite transparent when it comes to its production suppliers, meaning that customers are actually not aware of to what extent they are damaging the environment. Nonetheless, customers will still constantly buy from it as most of them value their closet more than the fact that the planet is at stake.
As mentioned above, one of Zara’s assets is the fact it is able to churn out new products constantly, depending on the people’s common demand. With the constant increase of social media’s fame, companies need to keep up with the speed of fashion trends. Research has been done about this and as a result of this phenomena, “the number of times a clothing item is worn before it is thrown out has decreased by 36%, in turn leading to a doubling of clothing production in the past couple of decades.” The advancement of over-production and mass consumption leads to serious damage to our surroundings. For instance, Zara makes use of a material that comes from wood pulp called viscose, and it puts trees at risk. Also, because of rough waste and air pollution, the production of this resource also causes water contamination. What is also not commonly considered attentively enough, is not only the result of mass production but, also the amount of waste created by the making of the products themselves. The overproducing causes a dangerous amount of water consumption, energy waste and many other consequences.
Lastly, despite the brand adopted some recycled packaging and uses a textile recycling program, the company’s data accessibility about the number of resources that go into the production of its clothes, is not as reachable as it is required to be. Being in 2021, also means respecting technological development and advancement that the human kind has made. As a result, companies are hardly pleasing the global expectations to respect the environment, prioritising their personal benefits. Of course there are other options, especially this year second hand shops are back in trend and there have been new apps created in which you can either buy or sell any product you like or you need to get rid of. It is a very efficient way to reuse, recycle and also have some personal income. Currently, the most famous second hand clothing apps are Depop, Vestiare Collective, Vinted, eBay and The RealReal. I personally, strongly recommend acknowledging the benefits of these tools and participating in making a difference.
