“OSCAR” OR “CHAOS”?
Professional Achievements
After all, you can’t spell “Oscar” without “chaos” and this is the most accurate word to describe the Academy Ceremony of 2022.
It was an historic and inspirational night of winnings. Here, the main events of the night.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS FOR WEST SIDE STORY
Firstly, Arianna DeBose won best supporting actress for West Side Story, the first openly queer woman and also Afro-Latina to win the Oscar.
“Lastly, imagine this little girl in the back seat of a white Ford Focus, look into her eyes: You see a queer, openly queer woman of color, an Afro Latina who found her strength in life through art. And that's what I believe we're here to celebrate. Yeah, so, to anybody who has ever questioned your identity ever, ever, ever, or you find yourself living in the grey spaces, I promise you this: There is indeed a place for us”
DIRECTOR OF THE POWER OF THE DOG
Jane Campion won director of The Power of The Dog, the third woman ever to win the category.
“I love directing because it’s a deep dive into the story, yet the task of manifesting a world can be overwhelming. The sweet thing is I’m not alone.”
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR OSCAR FOR CODA,
Troy Kotsur wins the best supporting actor Oscar for Coda, becoming the first deaf man to win an Academy Award.
“I just wanted to say that this is dedicated to the deaf community, the Coda community and the disabled community. This is our moment.”
Moreover, Coda was the first film with a largely deaf cast to win a best picture Oscar.
WILL SMITH SLAP
The most shocking moment raised a scandal all over social media reaching 3 million tweets in a couple hours and became the new meme of 2022. Chris Rock made a joke comparing Jada Pinkett Smith’s looks to “G.I. Jane,” her husband Will Smith stormed onto stage where he appeared to slap the comedian. The audio feed cut from the telecast, and Smith appeared to be screaming “Keep my wife’s name out your f---ing mouth!” according to reporters on the scene. Moments later, Smith won his first best actor award for portraying Richard Williams, father and coach of Venus and Serena in the film . With tears streaming down his face Smith gave a rambling speech in which he apologised to the academy and his fellow nominees. He said “a fierce defender of his family.” and “Love will make you do crazy things.”
The Oscar Awards are a moment of celebration for the hard work spent behind every picture.
Unfortunately Will Smith’s violence overshadowed the important winnings that made big steps to include minorities in the Hollywood successful world.
